Our long national nightmare is over...

Last night I along with the majority of Americans rejoiced at the stunning landslide that was to be the 44th President of the USA-Barack Obama.

For the first time the words failed me as I tried to encapsulate what this means so I took some words from another President's speech at another time when the ideals of Democracy were at an all time low and world opinion had turned against the USA for a major land war we were mired in:

My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.

Our Constitution works; our great Republic is a government of laws and not of men. Here the people rule. But there is a higher Power, by whatever name we honor Him, who ordains not only righteousness but love, not only justice but mercy.

As we bind up the internal wounds of Watergate, more painful and more poisonous than those of foreign wars, let us restore the golden rule to our political process, and let brotherly love purge our hearts of suspicion and of hate.

Gerald Ford August 9, 1974

Let us hope that these words ring true once again 34 years later and that the lessons of the past and present guide us to a better tomorrow.

Well said we were both crying by the end of his speech last night!
