From my personal perspective all meat is a dead animal and different beasts are eaten, or taboo, in different cultures; my only objection to dog was the method of dispatch which is inhumane.
I'm a diver and now live in Hong Kong and am fairly active with anti-finning/shark conservation groups based here. I do think the issues have been blurred, as there are for me 2 distinct aspect - first the method of dispatch, and no-one can argue the practice of finning is humane or in anyway morally defensible. The second is sustainability and the protection of endangered species; but this is wrapped up in a lot more than just the Asian fin market - it is a gnarly mess of unsustainable fishing techniques (by-catch deaths); environmental devastation (pollution, dynamite or cyanide fishing),the disgusting use of shark embryos, jaws and teeth as tourist trinkets (who is buying them?) and the much over-looked market for shark meat and oils within Europe and America.

Laying the entire blame for the annihilation of sharks at the feet of Chinese soup drinkers allows so many other contributing factors to continue unabated. And on shifting cultural practices I agree with Abraham Lincoln that, the best way to destroy your enemy is to make him (sic) your friend.
