S.F Bay Sharks? We Got 'Em

For shark guys who spend a lot of time looking for sharks in far flung places it's reassuring to discover that our very own San Francisco Bay, with an average depth of 21 feet, is home to some very big sharks.

In fact 13-14 foot critters are being discovered on a weekly basis prompting a research team from U.C Davis in tandem with the Aquarium of the Bay to try and discover more about our homegrown super predators. Naturally if there are sharks and science going on in San Francisco you'll find David McGuire front and center with camera and editing bay in hand to cover it.

David McGuire-Shark Talk, New Film

Local filmmaker David McGuire of the recent Shark Stewards film has completed new short format shark film with the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco.

The subject is our own Sevengill sharks. As it turns out San Francisco Bay is teeming with these huge and reclusive critters.

David is one of a few filmmakers who think "sharks first" when it comes to making films about these magnificent animals. He has distinguished himself in the industry as s serious documentary filmmaker and serious shark advocate. Join him this month for the opening of his new film City of the Shark:

Thursday, the 29th at the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco.

This will be a first time screening of this 15 minute documentary on local sharks, including tagging and tracking the sevengill sharks of the San Francisco Bay with researchers from UC Davis and the Aquarium of the Bay. The event will include live sharks, live music by rocker Mike Gibbons who did the soundtrack for the film, food, drink and sharky conversation. We will also world premiere at the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival
Feb 21 at 1 PM.

Ill be hosting a series of shark films at the festival, and afterwards I will be moderating a panel discussion sponsored by Greenplanet Films titled Sharks: Myths and Misconceptions. Please come if you can and pass this on to anyone interested in sharks and the ocean.

Monster Sharks in San Francisco Bay? Heck Yeah!

A few years ago on a flight out of Oakland we noticed something "sharky" below the plane. It was spring and as the plane banked back over the airport we looked down and saw "hundreds" of shark outlines in the muddy water moving slowly up and down the rock breakers at the airport. At the time we thought "these must be large Leopard Sharks".

Little did we know at the time there's a much bigger shark species lurking in San Francisco Bay.

Fast forward to last week. On a visit to our local Aquarium of the Bay, lo and behold there was the monster that we had seen in previous years from 15,000 feet...all ten feet of her!

San Francisco, CA, June 20, 2008 – Aquarium of the Bay today welcomed a nearly 10-foot long female sevengill shark, believed to be the largest of its species in captivity. The Aquarium, which conducts extensive research on sharks in the San Francisco Bay, has more than 50 sharks among its family of more than 20,000 aquatic animals.

Bringing the over 330-pound shark into Aquarium of the Bay required many skilled hands including the Aquarium’s husbandry team, as well as other Aquarium of the Bay staff members. Volunteer Steve Shirley of Team Fishfinder also played a major role in bringing the shark to the Aquarium.
