Can white shark cage diving get any better?

Sea Lion Pup with Shark Photo by Ken Bill
After a pretty nice crossing, we arrived at Guadalupe this morning and started sharking right away. What can I say? Wow, wow, wow!!! doesn't quite describe it. What a day!

14 different sharks, including 2 new ones, a sea lion pup swimming with a shark, a full breach just about 3 ft. from the boat, up to 6 sharks around the cages at once.

Everyone got tons of great pictures. Easily one of the best days at Guadalupe ever!
Day 3 Today things went back to normal.  We had 4 sharks today, but everyone is still talking about yesterday.
"Thor" swimming by the cages! Photo by Ken Bill
Day 4 Another good day, with 3 sharks showing up and another male, that hasn't been seen before at Guadalupe, making an appearance.
Day 5 The awesome shark action was followed by a really smooth trip home. What a perfect trip!

Great White Shark in Ensenada?

A blue whale. The worlds largest animal!
August 22 We had smooth sailing through the night and passed customs in Ensenada. About an hour outside Ensenada we spotted some dolphins and a few blue whales. The largest animal on earth, just a few yards away from the boat.

And then......... Shaaaaaaaaark!

We spotted a shark fin cruising on the surface and didn't know at first, what kind of shark it was. A mako? A Great White? Upon examining the photos, it was a juvenile Great White Shark!Maybe 3-4ft. just a tiny shark, cruising on the surface for a while.
Baby Great White Shark, outside Ensenada

So now we're cruising towards Guadalupe. The Ocean is flat calm, very nice indeed.
August 23 - We had 3 sharks today with some close passes in the afternoon. One of the Sharks we saw has not been seen in 3 years! It's great to have our old friends back.
August 24 - Another great day of Sharking! 6 known sharks along a few unidentified ones. Everyone got to look into a sharks eyes and had him look back. That's probably the experience that hooked me on sharkdiving some 11 years ago. There is no other experience quite like that. If you haven't been there, you just have to come out and see for yourself!
August 25 - Today was great again. It's amazing, how these sharks come by our vessel day after day! The ride home is starting out smooth as well.  Another amazing trip!

Jawesome trip to Guadalupe Island 2012!

Another great trip to report for the 2012 white shark season. Smooth sailing down to Guadalupe Island and 12 different sharks on the first day with visits from Diablo, Thor, The Russian, Bite Face, Harvey, Mau and Chugey along with 2 new, unidentified sharks were among the sharks competing to be photographed by our divers.

The second day was a bit slower, but we had one new shark entertain our divers all day long with some fantastic passes close to the cage.

On our last day we had" Bullseye" show up and put on the best show of the season. He has not been seen since 2009 and was curious to check us out. He was investigating our cages, propellers and divers at extremely close range, this is what we call "Epic" shark diving. Our trip back was a smooth as it gets, with glassy ocean waters and no waves.

Are you on our next trip, we cannot wait to see you!

Commodore Decker aka William Windom R.I.P

If you're a Trek Fan, and who isn't, you'll note the sad passing of one of the franchises most beloved episode characters, Commodore Decker in The Doomsday Machine 1967.

William Windom gave an outstanding Trek performance in his role as the emotionally wrecked Commodore channeling his inner Captain Ahab to kill "The Mechanical Devil" on board the USS Constellation.

It was a role that left William Shatner the consummate and undisputed king of "over-the-top" acting in an unusual acting space, that of second banana.

Television lost a lion yesterday, but thanks to You Tube we'll always have his roar. Enjoy:

Shark Photographer James Dylan - Epic!

In 2011 we were excited to have underwater photographer James Dylan aboard the good ship Horizon for a week of shark adventures at Isla Guadalupe. Famed for white shark encounters that have been thrilling divers for the past decade.

James and his sharks did not disappoint and he cranked our some amazing shark images. Here's his report and his website for a closer look at his white sharks:

"I climbed slowly down the ladder trying to adjust to the extra weight strapped to my waist. I looked around for my designated regulator and drop into the royal blue Pacific. The water was cold as ice, but I didn’t care. The metal enclosure that I stood in rocked back and forth with the waves and I had to grab onto the bars to keep my balance. I scanned the endless ocean for some sign of life besides the school of fish surrounding me. A dark shadow moves in the distance. A massive great white shark materializes out of the depths. My heart stops and I have to remind myself to breathe out of the regulator. This was the one moment I had been waiting for for 17 years and that one moment will forever be seared into my mind.

Over the next two days I came in contact with between 10 and 15 different white sharks, all with different personalities. On day two, perhaps the most famous shark at Guadalupe showed up. They call him shredder. He is 16 feet long and always loves to show off to the divers watching him. He circled the cage for three hours giving everyone a good look. As he swims past you, he looks at you dead in the eye and you can see his eye snap from diver to diver. Let me tell you, there is absolutely nothing more amazing, thrilling, and terrifying than having a 16 foot great white, swimming mere inches away from you, stare at you; studying you.  Another smaller, unidentified shark, paid us a visit later that day. This one was showing more… aggressive tendencies. He would dive deep and torpedo up from the bottom right at our cage and veer off at the last second.

The whole reason I got into photography was for this very reason.  Shark Diver was able to provide me with the opportunity to capture stunning images which I was able to display at an exhibition last spring.  Several examples from this exhibition are posted above.  For more of my work, please visit my website at www.james-dylan.com.

I had an incredible experience with Shark Diver.  I hope to see you all again very soon."

2012 Isla Guadalupe Shark Week - Best Ever?

Up close and personal - Kinga Phillips (click to see)
Dive Operations Manager Martin Graf is just back in port long enough to file this quick report with a couple of images for divers joining us for the 2012 white shark season.

Sounds like they just lit the fuse on the biggest white shark opener ever!

August 11th: We are boarding the M/V Horizon in San Diego, eager to dive with Great White Sharks at Isla Guadalupe

For me this marks the start of the 11th season diving with these magnificent creatures and I wonder who will be there? Did the regulars make it back? I guess we will see.

August 13th: We had a pretty smooth ride down here, the cages are in the water, the divers ready ..... and the Sharks?
8:40am: "White Shaaaaaaaaaaark!"  Chugey is here! He's a 15+ ft male that we have seen every year since 2004. It looks like he got into a fight. His face isn't looking too pretty!
Noon:  All I have to say is "WOW!" Unbelievable! We had at least 7 different Sharks this morning! We can't possibly top this!
Evening: Well, we did top the morning! 11 different Sharks! 3 at the cage at once. Great up and close encounters. A couple actually touched the cage. The Russian, Schmitty and Bite Face are back as well. It looks like Bite Face lost his transmitter (more from Patric later) and now we have prime rib for dinner. That's what I call a perfect day!
PS Bruce, a 16+ ft male just swam by the boat!

August 14: Who said it couldn't get any better?  12 different Sharks today. Tapikul, Thor, Big, and Flipkin made their first appearance of the season. Phenomenal action all day!
August 15th: We had another good morning, with 5 sharks showing up and now we're packing up to make our way home.

What an incredible "Shark Week" here's to the start of 2012!

Cheers,

Conservation Messaging - PSA's To Watch

Conservation PSA's are the lifeblood of any movement and one of the leaders of the shark movement is David Diley who produced this great look at Fiji's sharks.

Sadly for the folks in Fiji, the Shark Sanctuary did not pass, a rare set back in an island nation that has, until last month, been a leader in shark conservation efforts.

All things comes to pass and we're sure the fine folks in Fiji (many of them in this video) will be back on the hunt for new shark protections soon, it's in their DNA to be innovative.

In the meantime watch this video and share it. Inspiration can also be a useful tool and this video has it in spades.

Kudos David, thank you for the images, the words, and the beauty and joy of sharks:

Shark Week VW Commercial - Behind The Scenes

Yes, that's Luke Tipple driving the SOVW or as we knew her "Skittles," in the Bahamas a few months ago during the filming of the anchor commercial to Shark Week 2012.

Seen it yet?

From the same team who brought you last years anchor commercial with Gillette, comes a series of very cool design, build, deploy shark commercials that bend the world of underwater exploration.

Luke was not alone in this endeavor. Greg "Moondog Mooney," was in charge of the design and build phase and underwater dive safety and site layout. Scotty Grey basically held the dive operations together with all those extras that productions need, and has been an integral part of every shark production we have completed for the past 5 years. Johnny Friday and his entire team shot this commercial in RED.

Kudos to the Bahamas Film Commission and Donna Mackey who once again smoothed the way for Bahamas film magic and to the Old Bahama Bay Hotel for providing the entire crew great accommodations.

Isla Guadalupe White Shark Cage Diving 2012 - Trip Report

From the Sat phone on the M/V Horizon this week a quick update from Captain Spencer on the M/V Horizon:

Moooove on over epic 2011 season and bow down to 2012 White Shark season!

16 passengers and a crew full of shark men (and women) set off on a 5 day journey of a life time and got a life time worth of White Sharks in just 8 hours!

As the sun sets over the hunched back of Guadalupe Island the prime rib is exiting the oven bound for a hot date with some happy folks.

A saxophone is caressing the air played by a passenger on the top deck. Others exchange experiences over a ice cold beer in lounge chairs on the back deck. After our arrival here at 4AM people began to stir in their cabins. Cages were in the water as the sun peaked up out of the big blue Pacific.

After breakfast everyone had a rotation in the cage to shake off the cob webs; it was game time. Enter Carcharodon carcharias (Great White Shark). For the next eight hours it was breath taking. Over twelve different sharks made an appearance on day one of the 2012 shark season.

At times they came within inches of the cages.

Here's my left side and then my right side, as if the sharks were putting on a show for our viewing pleasure. We saw so many sharks today my voice is shot from yelling WHITE SHARK so much. The afternoon it was even crazier. There were times when people would come out of the water saying they were seeing 3-4 sharks at a time!!!

What an epic day aboard the good ship Horizon.

As I walk through the laptop filled salon, divers share their epic day with photos. Pictures and movies of sharks up close, sharks in the back ground of divers, and of course smiling the whole time. No words can explain what just happened here at this magical island in the middle of the Pacific ocean.

I can't wait to see what day two has to offer.

Cheers,

Captain Spencer Salmon

Shark Week 2012 Returning to Their Roots? Yes!

After five very long years in the wilderness searching for Shark Week programming that was innovative, informative, and flat out beautiful from a visual perspective - we have arrived.

Shark Week is back!

A none to soon. It would seem that executive producer Brooke Runnette (we still want that couch) has re-discoverd the awe and inspiration of the original Shark Week and added a healthy dose conservation messaging along with innovative camera work.

The kind of, "in your face" animal encounters that made Shark Week the best week on television and inspired a host of up and coming commercial shark diving operations world wide to seek sharks - everywhere.

We were one of those operations. Inspired back in 2009 to create Shark Diver and we have never looked back.

Kudos to everyone who had a hand in the 25th Anniversary of Shark Week and a big cheer, thus far, for the programming. The Air Jaws Franchise has never looked better.

Oh, and the Volkswagen commercials have been pretty epic as well, but we had 25 years of inspiration to get us there.

Isla Guadalupe's Best Shark Week Ever?

Jaques, one of the regulars at Isla Guadalupe
Are you excited about the upcoming Shark Week? ....well, so am I.

The wait is finally over. We leave tonight to Isla Guadalupe for our very own "Shark Week", hopefully the best ever!

I've been going down to Guadalupe for the last 10 years, and I'm super excited to go see my old friends again.

Many of you know about Shredder, Bruce, Bite Face, Jaques, Lucy, Chuggy and the list goes on.

As a matter of fact, we now have 124 individual sharks identified. How many will we add this year? Who's going to be back? I can't wait to find out. It never gets old.

If anything, after 10 years I'm even more excited to hear the familiar "White Shaaaaaaaark!" yell from our crew for the first shark of the day, kind of a boat tradition for us.

I know I'm not the only one that feels that way as I'm looking forward to a few of you coming back, some for the 3rd 4th and 5th time this year.

I will keep you posted with regular trip reports and updates from the Island.

Let's go shark diving!

WWF, AlJazeera, and Whale Sharks?

If you want to see some really good conservation reporting - go to AlJazeera this week.

AlJazeera you say? Yes.

Kudos to Gelareh Darabi and her entire crew for this production.

For the past three years AlJazeera has produced a series of  top notch and in depth looks at our planet and the many conservation issues facing it.

This week the program Earthwise focused on Donsol and commercial whale shark diving there along with actual bots on the ground conservation efforts by the WWF who have made Donsol home for the past decade.

The look at how commercial shark diving helps local communities is a breath of fresh air, and for a global commercial shark diving industry proof positive that the net effects of commercial shark diving are good for local economies, conservation, and ultimnately the animals themselves.

Sustainable tourism trumps extractive fisheries every single time.

"Whale shark hunting hit a peak in the 1990s, with prices of up to $800 per kilogramme of dried fin meat attracting a fresh influx of hunters to Donsol in the Philippines. In 1997, around 200 of the creatures were slaughtered. Whale sightings started to diminish. After campaigning by the local community and conservation groups, whale shark hunting became punishable by Philippine law in 1998. WWF Philippines, the UNDP and the local government together developed a community-based ecotourism and conservation programme, with the aim of providing local people with a sustainable income whilst protecting the species. In a few years Donsol had transformed from a small coastal community into one of the world's most popular destinations for whale shark tourism."

Shark Week at 25 Thanks Brooke Runnette!

Brooke, we want that couch!
For those who do not know her she's the consummate insider at Discovery Networks with her hands firmly on the reigns of Shark Week.

She's executive producer Brooke Runnette, responsible for recent programming changes at the network that include building relationships with top tier shark conservation orgs.

At 25 Shark Week faces a series of programming challenges that few other programs face, the biggest being relevancy.

How many times can you spin shark teeth and blood and gore in the water and still stay fresh?

Fortunately over the past 25 years shark conservation has developed to a point where the messaging has coalesced (finally) and conservation groups have developed smart ideas, great outreach, and solid conservation programs.

In short a programmers dream offering fresh, relevant content to a 25 year programming dynasty that ultimate helps sharks by engaging a domestic audience of 30 million.

And that's what the 25th Anniversary of Shark Week is all about this year, along with a return to some of the kind of shark visuals that made Shark Week into the long lived juggernaut that it is today.

Point your televisions this Sunday to Shark Week. If the industry whispers are true this year will be the start of something amazing.

About that, at least we know the commercials will be amazing, stay tuned.

Coolest Shark Image of 2012

The title of "Coolest Shark Image of 2012" is one we do not take lightly.

There's a veritable plethora of cool shark images floating around out there taken by some truly artistic folks.

But is this image, currently making the rounds on Facebook, has the "double wow factor" of a Bull Mahi in the mouth of this Mako.

Add to that the colors, the eyeball, the teeth and what's not to crown this image as the Best of 2012?

That is until this years crop of white shark images from Isla Guadalupe come pouring out.

To whomever shot this image, kudos, you have impressed even us and we're notoriously hard to impress that's one hell of a shot.

Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd, Cowardice Under Direct Action Fire?

Interpol, the worlds police, have issued a Red Notice for Paul Watson titular head of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Watson is currently on the run exhibiting a simply stunning display of abject cowardice in the face of Direct Action.

This is a wake up call to his donor base both large and small. Your conservation money, the money you had hoped would be used for change, has been taken from you by a slick conservation media machine.

And while no one wants to get inside the mind of the Sea Shepherd faithful for fear they will discover an overweight hamster on a giant wheel wheezing to a techno version of Kermit The Frogs, "It's not Easy Being Green," one has to ask, why run Paul?

Paul Watson is more than happy to send his volunteers/unpaid reality tv actors into situations that ultimately put then in harms way while he himself is unwilling to even step into a court room where he would get to explain his Direct Action policies to the widest audience he has ever had.

Watson instead has crafted a series of inane excuses for his lack of,  "Doushitemo" (at any cost), which flies in the face of far too many of Watsons own stump speeches to his donor base where he regales them with tales of personal bravery on the high seas.

About that, as it turns out Watson is also not above faking his own assassination attempts to bolster his claims of conservation bravery. This is an organization that, "at any cost," spends donor money to pump out slick conservation media fakery, year after year, to garner more donations.

It's a Conservation Möbius Loop of the worst kind.

After 30 years Sea Shepherd has proved an abject failure as an organization for actual and lasting changes to wildlife.

They have become unfortunate parodies of themselves and in the minds of their donor base, "too big to fail." There's a meme out there that suggests, and is propagated by Sea Shepherd, that if they stop their Direct Actions the entire world will go to hell in a hand-basket because there are no other organizations out there to fill the void.

It's a lie.

In fact there are plenty of small boots on the ground organizations out there, thanks in large part to social media and smart phones, that need your help now. They are the real face of conservation, not the donor paid vacations in the South Pacific with Sea Shepherds elite Shark Angels - an ongoing conservation sham where the biggest hurdle this "elite team" faces has been the lack of access to dwindling supplies of glitter lip gloss and SPF 50.

You have a choice, dig a bit deeper in your search for a conservation organization org that delivers change, or continue to support a bloated increasingly irrelevant organization that at it's core (Paul Watson) fails to live up to the ongoing hype.

Paul Watson as an conservation organization leader has shown to the world that his organization does not deserve your respect, admiration, or money.

For many out there in the conservation sphere this is not news. For the Sea Shepherd faithful who like the idea of wearing pirate shirts and being part of something grand, this is gut check time.

Support something new, try something small, grow an organization that delivers conservation change and one that you know will spend your conservation money wisely. Fact is when any organization gets to over 11 million dollars in revenue resources and it's Conservation CEO is placed on Interpols Red Notice you have to wonder...are the worlds animals really being served here?

Shark Week Returning to OMG?

If you have been a fan of Shark Week for the past 25 years you're on par with the kind of fanaticism that can only be found with the Star Wars franchise - Han Shot First Dammit!

So it was with great pleasure we watched the teaser for Shark Apocalypse and segment 1.08, a simply stunning play in slow motion of our favorite shark and light.

Good stuff if you can get it, prompting the question, has Shark Week returned to their roots and the halcyon days of OMG shark film making?

Hat Tip: Dorsal Fin Blog.

On Sunday we will know, fingers crossed:

Film Productions Gone Wrong

It's all over the Internet lead by this mornings Daily Mail who, not too surprisingly, have it all wrong.

What you are about to witness is a film production going sideways - fast. We know because when we do productions we ensure that none of our crew play with:

1. Second hand concussion grenades

2. Second hand stunt men

Seriously, at what point in this video do you say, "nothing good is going to come from this." For us it was at the .02 mark. The first second was that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach, similar to the white shark cage footage from last summer off the East coast.

Enjoy:
